This Bank Holiday weekend sees Loose Synths whip out the jerk chicken and rum to throw our first ever Carnival after party at The CAMP in East London. Alongside a wealth of our usual DJ talent, we are incredibly excited to welcome the chaps from Thunder Disco Club down. Their blend of impeccably selected house and disco has been sending dancefloors absolutely nuts for a while now and they also write a stellar blog which has a penchant for naked ladies, so with this in mind they seemed the perfect choice to headline.
We caught up with TDC to chat about what they’ve been up to recently and to see what they’ve got in store for us on Sunday.
How long has the TDC been doing it’s disco thang?
We had the first Thunder Disco at a pretty neglected spot in Glasgow called the Lite Club in June 2009 …so for just over two years.
How did all 4 discover of you shared a love for disco?
We didn’t really discover disco together. We were all going to similar parties in Glasgow like Optimo and the Art School but because Glasgow clubs end at three everyone always ends up back at a party sharing music and chewing each others ear off and we met through them. We all enjoyed each other’s tastes, which were all quite different but with disco and B movies as a binding force.
It’s recently kicked off for you in a big way, hosting one of the main off-Sonar events in Barcelona this summer, how did that come about?
Well our man Sweets Edison, a quarter of TDC, moved out there in June with his Mrs and was inevitably drawn to some of the great parties. He met a couple of DJ’s and the guys that ran Athletic Disco Club. We started putting a few of their mixes on the blog and we were invited out to play with them at Cabaret Berlin. It was definitely one of the funnest parties we’ve played - we basically walked into a transvestite hitting the high note of Nessun Dorma while the Maitre’D trapeezed down the length of the club, feather boa and cock & balls flapping elegantly in the wind. Some show! And it didn’t stop there - which is what is fantastic in a way about the ADC concept - we had a full team of cross-dressing beauties giving us our own little TDC cabaret backdrop.
So anyway, after that they invited us out again for their off Sonar Party and we thought that we’d do our own while we were out there and use it as an excuse to get away from Glasgow’s summer wetness. So we teamed up with the Subclub who we’d been doing some stuff with in the UK and did one on he rooftop of Axel Hotel. It was beautifull, everyone was crackin the champagne and lying about the pool thinking they were Don Johnson.
What else do you play other than disco?
Loads really. If we like it we play it. We don’t really like to be pigeon-holed. House, Techno, Afro beat, Italo, Whale Song - as long as it looks good topless we’re happy to give it a spin.
Do you think the amount of breasts on your blog have added to your success?
Definitely. Have you never seen Total Recall?
What are your essential dancefloor detroyers?
A couple of Andy Blake tunes tend to send people up the walls, also stuff on Kompakt like Matias Aguayo and Danny Malaso. Just got that Falty DL ‘Make it Difficult’ tune through the post – that’s being given a serious rub at the moment. Bit of Sylvester always brings out the moves and of course Prince…the one and only.
What does the future hold for TDC?
Well starting in September we’ll be sharing a Sunday monthly residency at the Subby alongside Auntie Flo’s ‘Highlife’, Instruments of Rapture’S The Revenge and Ali Ooft, Optimo and Derrick Carter. We’ve got a band called Organs of Love playing at our first one on September 11th. They’re kind of our favorite thing at the moment and have just been signed to Optimo Music, so really looking forward to that!
Other than that, another off-Sonar party next year and get out to BCN for Xmas again. We’ve got also got a few guest slots on the horizon… so keeping busy.
Are you looking forward to the Loose Synths Carnival Special? What can we expect from you chaps?
Big Time. Absolutely love Carnival – one of my favorite weekends of the year. We’ll no doubt get some tropical vibes together – there’s some really great Highlife and Afro beat that I’ve been looking for an excuse to get out the trunk for a while.
You can see the Thunder Disco Club headline our Carnival Party this Sunday at The CAMP. Free entry all night, 10-6am.
